On Release October 2008 - Miracle at St. Anna is a film by controversial director Spike Lee. It follows four black soldiers of the all-black 92nd Infantry Division who get trapped near a small Tuscan village in September 1944 on the Gothic Line during the Italian Campaign of World War II after one of them risks his life to save an Italian boy.
The story of Miracle at St Anna, drawn from the novel of the same name by American author James McBride recounts the deeds of four "Buffalo soldiers" from the Negro 92nd division who find themselves trapped behind the enemy lines in Tuscany, Italy. In the book it is like a Roman mosaic, piecing together different narratives to reveal the complex moral landscape of war.
The story is inspired by the August 1944 Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre perpetrated by the Waffen-SS in retaliation to Italian partisan activity. There is also a reference to a sculpted head from Ponte Santa Trinita in Florence that acts as the films start point object of interest.
