SURVEY ARTICLE - Last month it was revealed that Purewell Electrical in Somerford Road was planning to relocate and that there was a possibility of a supermarket chain moving in. Managing director Ian Griffiths of Purewell Electrical said he had been in negoitations for over a year with discount superstore Lidl. Lidl are at time of writing waiting on planning permission.
Half a mile west of the electrical store on Somerford Road is the long empty eyesore of the old Style South Interiors store. This large blue building, the first thing visitors see on entering Somerford road if plans are approved become another budget superstore including three other types of retail outlets.

At a recent planning meeting councillors were confronted with another application for a discount store on top of the Lidl move. This application by Brookhouse Ltd was to replace the old store with a brick and metal cladded building to create four retail units - one of which would be food. Rumours abound but the likelyhood of Aldi locating here is not out of the question.
Councillors heard that planning officers recommended approval but uniformly voted to defer the proposal on the grounds of a Retail Impact Assessment being carried out before making a decision. The plan will be decided at the next planning meeting scheduled for October.
