Stanpit A quiet period Residents of Stanpit have requested the installation of a pedestrian crossing at a busy section of the road just off Purewell roundabout but may have to wait four years. The councils Community Services committee were given a 200 signature petition from local residents but were amazed that the possibility of a crossing would be delayed by that amount of time.
Cllr. Lucy Filer for Purewell and Stanpit said there is high proportion of elderly residents in this area and she is has concerns over having to wait till possibly 2012. She added that given the age of local people this may have disasterous effect anytime.
The petition was submitted in July requesting a crossing at the northern end of Stanpit, between Purewell and Buccaneers Close. While officers agreed that there was a high volume of vehicles within this section and the high speeds of traffic coming off the Purewell roundabout, their investigations gave no "best location" for a crossing.
Adding to this the fact that Dorset County Council would have to undertake a pedestrian and traffic count to confirm the need for a crossing. But with funding for the 5 year Local Transport Plan accounted for, Bob Baker Transport and Highways manager said it was unlikely that the possible cost of installation, £80,000 could be found and set aside until 2012.
Council leader, Cllr Alan Griffiths said that Stanpit has become one of the busiest roads in the Borough, highlighting the speed of vehicles coming off the roundabout and that a crossing is needed to slow traffic down. |
