Page 3 of 3 Volkswagon Passat This model has been around since 1973 has been a good seller for VW. The latest Passat invoked in 2005 is larger with regards to length, width and height. Although the shape appears to be on the dull side it still appeals to conservative buyers and some fleet buyers. Originally based on the Audi chassis it now takes on the Golf platform albiet a more stengthened version. The body lines have been enhanced with more chrome and the interior with soft feel surfaces and a bold fascia layout.
With excellent build quality, a better comfortable drive and the massive boot makes this model attractive for those of us who have a lot of stuff to lug around. As with most VW's the engines have proved themselves for reliability and strength. The diesel-powered version is the best all-round performer throughout the range. The Euro IV, 2.0-litre turbodiesel (140BHP) is an ideal match for the Passat. Torque of 236lb ft is developed between 1750 rpm and 2500rpm, which in turn means less gearshifts are needed to maintain cruising speeds. Gearbox-wise go for the excellent Direct Shift Gearbox, with dual-clutch setup. In a nutshell, the DSG can be driven as a normal automatic, or as a manual sequential-shift gearbox with gearchanges effected through a tap of the gearshift. Petrol engine options are 1.6 ltr Di (115 bhp), 2 ltr Di (150 bhp) plus 140 bhp and 170 bhp TDi's. Top of the range is the 250bhp 3.2 V6 petrol unit, which has the FSI direct-injection technology, and is matched up with the DSG gearbox and VW's 4Motion four-wheel drive system. This makes for a very quick heavy family saloon car. The Passat now has LED tail lights which react quicker and have a longer service life. Hazard warning lamps are activated if the vehicle brakes at more than 7 meters per second above 40 mph or the ABS is activated. Also the model now has a electro-mechanical park brake system operated by a simple button - Mercedes have had this for some time already. For those of you who cannot master hill starts the system will hold the brakes on till you pull away. In the cabin is dual phase front airbags and side impact airbags plus a high strength "B" pillar to transfer side collision impact (the most dangerous) to sills and roof. Also included is active headrests to reduce whiplash injuires. Gadget wise how about the Bluetooth connection that allows the Passat to turn itself into a hands free mobile. Double sun visors that work on side and front screens simultaneously. Plus a large air-conditioned glovebox to keep your A4 documents and your large bar of Dairy Milk cool. Optional is an adaptive cruise control to keep you at a safe distance depending on your speed. Depreciation in value shouldn't be a problem with this model so expect to have to hunt for the bargains, but try and avoid high milers if possible. Reasonably popular with fleet/sales reps so expect a plentiful supply of choices. Rating 4.5 Stars
