Vectra  The most commonly seen cars on the road are also the favourites for fleet buyers but popular with used car buyers seeking a good all round large family car.  Here we look at the top three favourites and the pro's and con's. The Vectra, Mondeo and the Passat

The Vauxhall Vectra

The Vectra has gone through a number of changes since it replaced the Cavalier.  Like 'em or love 'em - Jeremy Clarkson doesn't) they have always sold well due to Vauxhall's massive discounts to fleet buyers.  Although the motoring mags have dumbed them down this doesn't deter the fleet owners, car hire companies or indeed the average family man looking for a reliable, comfortable car.

The Vectra had some significant changes in 2005 over the 2002 models. Circular double-optic headlamps and large chrome 'V' grille similar to the new Astra and Tigra.  Front and rear bumpers have more depth on most 2005 models.

The new Vectra is bigger than the old version, more room in a modern interior and more upgraded suspension for a more comfortable ride. Hatchback, saloon and estate models are offer more rear legroom and two armchair-type rear seats rather than a flat bench seat cushion.

The 2005 models have the engine options of a 1.8, turbocharged 2.0i, 2.2i direct injection (replacing the normally aspirated 2.0) petrol units, and in addtion a 1.9 CDTi - with 120bhp and 150bhp power outputs and 3.0 V6 CDTi turbodiesels.

The top range VXR model, with a turbocharged 255bhp V6, upgraded and tuned suspension plus more aggressive styling, rolling on 18-inch alloys.

The interior has a lot of "soft-feel" plastic and chrome especially after 2005 but gives an all round sense of durability and strength.  Higher range models get more enhanced door trims and fascia.

Some models suffered from glitches ie; ealier 2.0 and 2.2 ltr diesels (discontinued) and problems with timing chain on 2.2i 16v.  The latter has been resolved.  Across the range electrical faults come up often as niggles but usually corrected and high milers may need full brake overhaul and possibly some of the suspension system components.  Servicing should be carried out every 20,000 miles.  For best power to mpg comparison the 1.8 Exclusive is recommended and at time of writing offered at massive discount to private buyers.

For the family car buyer looking for a used Vectra there is a lot of choice at dealers, car supermarkets or privately. With so many around prices are extremely competitive and good value.  Dealers are more pricey but the back-up of the Network Q system is good.  Supermarkets will have vast stocks of these cars mainly de-fleeted and possibly high mileage but the majority of fleet cars are regulary serviced.  Private buyers offer good value but check service history and have mileage verified.
