Gold Hill Shaftesbury Anyone who has watched commercial television since 1973 will remember the young lad struggling up a very steep hill pushing a bakers trade bike. The narrative of the advert was of a Yorkshire accent and the ads film was given the aged look. The picturesque scene was in fact Gold Hill, Shaftesbury in the County of Dorset. A long way south from where the advert gave the impression is was, somewhere north of the Watford Gap services.
The reason Gold Hill is in the news again? Hovis, a long established brand name associated with brown bread has decided not to film the latest advert at Gold Hill but opted for Liverpool. Liverpool, City of Culture 2008 is a long way north from the beautiful Blackmore Vale.
Mayor of Shaftesbury, cllr Winifred Harvey said it was a shame that the production company had not returned to Gold Hill. Even though the ever changing world goes on, Gold Hill still appears to be in a time constant. Local residents say that the area never gets the recognition it deserves because people assume it is in Yorkshire.
The new advert of two minutes was aired on Friday 12th September, portraying the life of the boy through over a century of social history, from the Suffragettes to the Millenium celebrations, a span of 122 years.
The PR company for Hovis said the new advert had been filmed in Liverpool because it was one of a few cities outisde the capital, London where there is still a wide architectural choice to portay the historical periods required in the commercial. |
