 Stanpit Marsh towards Mudeford This marsh along with the Steamer Point area at Mudeford are designated areas for managed conservation and therefore a responsibility of the local authority. A popular area for wildlife watchers and photographers the marsh has a footpath that leads from Stanpit park to the riverside edge of the Stour as flows towards the harbour and ultimately the sea. From here you have wide unhindered views of the harbour and Hengistbury Head. The Conservation Trust has just completed a Visitor Centre made from natural products and should be open by late Summer 2008. This mainly wooden centre which helps to blend in with the background has a patio and a large glass window facing south towards the harbour mouth giving commanding views to visitors. Visitors are welcomed to the marsh along with their dogs although it is a requirement that the dogs are kept on leads. The grasses are maintained naturally by grazing animals, ponies, horses, cattle and sometimes sheep at certain times of the year. The natural pools which are filled twice a day by the tide are home to many small creatures. The taller grasses are seasonal home to many birds whether they be marine or land based. Again this is another area in Christchurch that boasts a place of peace and serenity with just the background throb of motor cruisers and the squealing of gulls. Photo Gallery
