A review of Dorset's strategy in waste management is in progress including using technology to further reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill. The review when finished will encompass Dorset's waste management and recycling for the next 20 years with primary consideration on efficient, cost effective and environment friendly methods of waste control and management.
The County's present waste strategy was approved in 2003 and was due to be re-examined in five years. But with significant changes and legislation on waste management and government set targets for recycling the council are reviewing their strategy earlier. "Dorset residents have given much enthusiasm and support for recycling and composting. We will be forging closer links with our borough and district councils to make this easier in the future," said Hilary Cox, county council cabinet member for the environment. Dorset's amount of recycled waste since 2003 has moved up from 26% to more than 42% - among the best rates in the UK. Legislation changes mean that a fine will be levied of £150 /tonne on councils who exceed the recommended limit of waste placed in landfill.
