An architectural feature of Priory House is to be preserved say local councillors. Priory House is a Grade II listed building constructed in1763.
The original story... The trustees of the 250 year old Priory House standing in the shadow of the Priory have stirred up the local historical society. The Christchurch Historical Society are objecting to a bid by the trustees of the house to remove a belvedere turret window from the roof of the house. The historians say that this would rip out an architechural asset. The proposal was to replace the "belvedere" turret which is in poor condition with a dormer window matching the existing dormers. Planning officers had agreed with the trustees but councillors refused to give approval to removal of the turret which is need of total reconstruction. Local historians were concerned that any changes to Priory House would lessen it's architechural features. Michael Hodges, a local historian told the planing committee that the belvedere turret was a rare feature today. David Hewitt, chairman of Priory House Trust said; "Being the current custodian of Priory House we do not feel that the turret should be rebuilt but replaced with a dormer matching the other late 18th century windows. |
