Saxon Square The Saxon Square shopping mall in central Christchurch is to undergo a major facelift say new leasees, RREEF Alternative Investments.  The Square is the popular key shopping area for the town although has had high shop business turnovers for some years now.

In the proposals revealed a week ago by the new owners the tiled overhanging canopies will be removed and the brick planters in the central walkway will go therefore creating a lighter, brighter more open walkway.

Dick Hines the architect who drew up the plans said that the Square's design of projecting canopies were popular at the time of construction of the shopping centre in the early part of 1980's, some 30 years ago.  However these create darkened store fronts not in keping with todays ideas.  The new design will give the effect of a light, airy and spacious environment.

The tile canopies will be replaced with glass units and the dark block work paving will give way to coloured stone and patterns.  Hanging baskets will be retained along with the replica Saxon cross.  Most of the trees that line the square will be retained and new bins ans seating will be installed.  After the revamp of the square and walkway, attention will be focused on the row of long term empty shops at the Pound Lane end of the mall.

All this work could begin in the Autumn with completion by Summer 2009 subject to approval by Christchurch councillors who's consent is mandatory and were given a preview friday last.  There will be no demand from local taxpayers for cash towards the project and formal planning application will be lodged shortly.
